What is cellulite and why do we get it?
There are many misconceptions surrounding cellulite, including the belief that it’s solely caused by weight gain or unhealthy lifestyles.
Cellulite occurs when fat deposits push through the connective tissue beneath the skin, resulting in a dimpled, lumpy appearance. It is more common in women than in men due to differences in the distribution of fat, muscle, and connective tissue.
While the exact cause is not fully understood, several factors are believed to contribute to its development:
- Hormonal factors: Hormones such as estrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, thyroid hormones, and prolactin are thought to play a role in cellulite formation. For example, estrogen can encourage fat deposition and affect the strength of connective tissues.
- Genetics: Genetic factors, such as predisposition to slow metabolism, fat distribution, and the structure of connective tissue, may contribute to the development of cellulite.
- Diet: A diet high in fat, carbohydrates, salt, and low in fiber may contribute to the development and visibility of cellulite. Consuming excess calories can lead to fat accumulation, which may worsen the appearance of cellulite.
- Lifestyle: Sedentary lifestyles, lack of exercise, and sitting or standing in one position for long periods may contribute to cellulite formation. Regular physical activity can help maintain healthy body weight and muscle tone, which may reduce the appearance of cellulite.
- Age: As people age, the skin becomes thinner and less elastic, making the appearance of cellulite more pronounced. Additionally, the connective tissue can lose its strength and flexibility over time, further contributing to cellulite.
- Weight gain and distribution: Gaining weight may increase the amount of fat beneath the skin, worsening the appearance of cellulite. Moreover, the way fat is distributed in the body can affect the development of cellulite.
We get it, no one loves cellulite. But it’s important to note that cellulite is a natural occurrence. Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, and staying hydrated can help improve the appearance of cellulite.
