How to choose foundation
Start with the result you want. A liquid foundation can offer flexible coverage and a range of finishes. Pressed or loose mineral foundation is convenient for layered coverage and targeted touch-ups. Powder foundation can provide complexion coverage with a soft, set finish. The name alone does not determine how a product performs, so use the coverage and finish stated on each product page.
Next, consider your skin’s current condition and preparation. Hydrated skin and thin, settled layers usually create a smoother base. If you prefer radiance, look for a natural or radiant finish; if surface shine is a concern, consider a matte finish or use powder only where required. Skin can change with the weather, skincare and life stage, so a formula that worked previously may not always be the best current match.
Finding your foundation shade and undertone
Shade depth indicates how light or dark the colour is, while undertone indicates whether it leans cooler, warmer, or more neutral. Test a small amount along the jawline and review it in natural light once it has settled. The best match should blend the face and neck without a visible stripe. Online imagery varies by screen, so use the brand’s current shade descriptions and Chelleon’s genuine colour-matching support where available.
Build coverage in thin layers. Apply with clean fingers, a sponge, or the recommended brush, starting where you need the most coverage and softening the edges. A labelled SPF is useful product information, but don't rely on foundation as your only sunscreen when you need sun protection.
Prepare with Makeup Primer, add Concealer only where needed, and find compatible tools in Makeup Brushes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose between liquid, mineral and powder foundation?
Choose based on finish, coverage, and application preference. Liquid formulas are often flexible; pressed and loose mineral formulas can be layered; powder foundation can add coverage while reducing shine. Compare exact product specifications because category names aren't universal performance standards.
How do I find my foundation undertone?
Use the brand’s cool, warm and neutral descriptions, then test near the jaw in natural light. Do not rely on wrist veins alone: depth and undertone differ, and screen colour can distort a shade.
Should foundation match my face or neck?
Aim for a shade that creates a natural transition from face to neck. Testing along the jawline is usually more useful than testing on the hand. Allow the product to settle before judging the match.
Can foundation be built from light to full coverage?
Only use the formula when it's described as buildable. Begin with a thin layer and apply coverage locally. Piling on a formula beyond its intended coverage can make the texture more visible.
Do I need a compact for a foundation refill?
Yes, when the product is sold as a refill. Check the compatible compact listed on the product page before ordering; different brands and formats are not automatically interchangeable.
Does foundation with SPF replace sunscreen?
Do not rely on foundation alone for sun protection. Apply a suitable sunscreen in the recommended amount and follow its reapplication instructions; treat foundation SPF as an additional labelled feature.
