What highlighter does

Highlighter reflects light, making selected areas appear more luminous. It is not the same as concealer, which adds coverage, or contour, which creates the appearance of shadow. A dedicated highlighter makes the purpose clearest; a multi-use complexion powder may also provide blush, bronzer or highlight shades when the manufacturer specifies those uses.

Cream and stick highlighters tend to blend easily with a fresh cream base. Powder highlighter can be swept over set makeup with controlled placement. A finely radiant finish creates a subtle sheen; stronger pearl or shimmer creates a more visible effect.

How to choose and apply highlighter

Choose a tone that harmonises with the complexion rather than leaving a pale or ashy stripe. Swatch images across relevant skin tones are more useful than shade names alone. For a natural result, tap a small amount onto the tops of the cheekbones. Depending on the product, you may also apply it lightly to the brow bone or other high points, while keeping cosmetic formulas away from areas not covered by the directions.

Apply cream highlighter before setting powder, or tap it carefully over a compatible base. Apply powder highlighter after setting the complexion. To avoid emphasising texture, use less product, choose a finer finish, and apply it to a smaller area. You don't need to highlight every traditional point of the face.
