What is retinol skincare?
Retinol is one member of the wider retinoid family: vitamin A ingredients used in skincare and medicine. Cosmetic formulas may contain retinol, retinaldehyde—usually shortened to retinal—or retinyl esters. These forms differ in stability, conversion steps and how a finished formula feels on the skin. A higher percentage is not automatically the best choice; the retinoid form, delivery system, supporting ingredients and your previous experience all matter.
With consistent use, an appropriate cosmetic retinoid can help improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture, dullness and blemish-prone skin. Results develop gradually. Retinoids can also cause dryness, flaking or sensitivity, especially when several strong actives are introduced together.
How to choose a retinol product
New users should prioritise a well-formulated beginner product with clear directions over the highest number on the label. A serum may suit a light, layered routine, while a cream can combine vitamin A with moisturising ingredients. Retinal products are not directly comparable with retinol percentages, and brand step-up systems should be followed in their intended sequence.
Choose a separate eye product only if the formula is explicitly designed for the eye contour. Ordinary face retinoids should not be taken close to the eyes simply because the face tolerates them.
How to introduce retinol
Apply the product at the point directed by its manufacturer, usually in the evening, to clean, dry skin. Begin on fewer nights each week and increase only if your skin remains comfortable. A simple moisturiser can help support comfort. On the same evening, avoid adding several new exfoliating acids or other potentially irritating products until you know how your skin responds.
Broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential every morning. Retinoids do not replace professional care: seek medical advice for persistent acne, severe irritation or a diagnosed skin condition. As a precaution, avoid cosmetic retinoids during pregnancy or while trying to conceive; ask an appropriate healthcare professional about breastfeeding.
Build a balanced routine
A practical routine is often simple: gentle cleanser, retinoid, moisturiser at night; then cleanser, optional antioxidant or hydrating serum, moisturiser and sunscreen in the morning. Peptides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide can usually sit elsewhere in the routine, but tolerance depends on the complete formulas. Introduce one change at a time so you can identify what helps and what irritates.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does retinol do for the skin?
Cosmetic retinol can help improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture, dullness and blemish-prone skin over time. It is not an overnight treatment, and results depend on the formula, regular use and individual tolerance.
What is the difference between retinol, retinal and retinoids?
Retinoid is the umbrella term. Retinol and retinal are cosmetic forms of vitamin A; prescription retinoids such as tretinoin are medicines. Percentages cannot be compared directly across different forms and formulations.
Which retinol should a beginner choose?
Choose a clearly labelled beginner formula or the first stage of a brand’s step-up system. Start less frequently than an experienced user and follow that specific product’s directions rather than chasing the highest percentage.
How often should I use retinol?
Begin with fewer evenings per week and increase gradually if comfortable. There is no single schedule for every formula. Reduce frequency and simplify the routine if persistent dryness, stinging or flaking develops.
Can I use retinol with vitamin C or niacinamide?
Many people can, but combining tolerable ingredients is different from layering several potent formulas at once. A simple option is vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night. Niacinamide can be used according to product directions. Introduce products separately first.
Do I need sunscreen when using retinol?
Yes. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning and follow label directions for application and reapplication. Sunscreen supports any routine addressing signs of sun exposure and helps reduce avoidable irritation from excessive UV exposure.
Can I use retinol while pregnant?
Avoid cosmetic retinoids during pregnancy and while trying to conceive as a precaution. Ask a doctor, pharmacist or midwife for individual guidance, including during breastfeeding.

I’ve been using Environ for many years including AVST 5 moisturiser.
Cannot fault it.
As a regular customer i am always happy with my products from Chelleon.
I’ve been using environ for at least 10 years and am so pleased with it. I thought I would mix it up a bit by adding c q 1.
Lovely light oil. Perfect mixed with clay mask for a great exfoliate.
Leaves my skin feeling so clean, I use as part of 3 step routine with cleansing gel and AVST 5 moisturer. Would recommend using Environ for healthy plump skin.
I have worked my way up to AVST 5 and my skin has never felt better! Packed with vitamin A, keeping my skin healthy and plump.
Leaves my skin feeling so clean! Environ keeps my skin looking smooth, fresh and glowy.
I was really surprised at how well these mitts worked. So much better than a cloth. I will always be using them from now on. Fantastic!
My go to product - I started using Environ after my third round of roaccutane and I’ve never looked back. I’ve also managed to avoid botox at the age of 39 which puts me in the minority of my age group!
Very nice to apply and really feels like it’s refining my skin.
This lash primer is an absolute game-changer! It instantly adds incredible length and volume before I even touch my mascara. Plus, it keeps my lashes conditioned and prevents smudging all day long. I will never skip this step again!
