What is the skin barrier?
The outermost layer of the skin acts as a protective barrier. It helps retain water and limits the entry of irritants. When that barrier is disrupted, skin may feel tight, rough, unusually sensitive or sore; products that were previously comfortable may begin to sting. Flaking and increased redness can also occur, although these signs are not specific and can reflect eczema, allergy, rosacea or another condition.
Common cosmetic triggers include over-cleansing, frequent scrubbing, combining several exfoliating acids, increasing retinol too quickly and using products that repeatedly cause irritation. Cold weather, low humidity and some medical treatments can also contribute.
A simple barrier-supporting routine
Pause optional exfoliants, scrubs and strong retinoids if the skin is sore or persistently stinging. Cleanse with lukewarm water and a mild product; very dry skin may not need a full morning cleanse. Follow with a moisturiser containing a useful balance of humectants, emollients and occlusives.
Humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid support water content. Ceramides and other lipids help reinforce the outer layer, while squalane and emollient oils smooth roughness. Occlusive ingredients reduce water loss. No single ingredient repairs every problem, so choose the full formula and texture according to how dry, oily or reactive the skin feels.
Use broad-spectrum SPF each morning. If sunscreen stings, try a simpler formula designed for sensitive skin rather than skipping protection. Add only one new product at a time. When the skin has remained comfortable, active products can be reintroduced gradually—there is no need to restart them all at once.
How long does recovery take?
Mild irritation may settle within days after the trigger is removed, while more significant dryness can take several weeks. Improvement should be steady. If the skin is worsening, repeatedly flaring or not improving, continuing to buy stronger “repair” products is not the answer.
Seek medical advice for a persistent or widespread rash, swelling, blistering, weeping, crusting, bleeding, severe itch or pain. Eczema, contact allergy and infection require correct diagnosis. Do not use a cosmetic collection as a substitute for prescribed treatment.
Explore dry and dehydrated skin care, redness and rosacea-prone skincare, ceramide skincare and facial SPF.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the signs of a damaged skin barrier?
Possible signs include tightness, roughness, flaking, increased sensitivity, persistent stinging and redness. These symptoms are not unique to barrier disruption and can also occur with eczema, contact dermatitis, rosacea or infection. If symptoms are severe, widespread, painful or persistent, ask a pharmacist, GP or dermatologist rather than self-diagnosing.
What can damage the skin barrier?
Common factors include harsh cleansing, very hot water, frequent scrubbing, using several exfoliating acids together and increasing retinol too quickly. Cold weather, low humidity, sun exposure and some medical treatments can also contribute. The first step is to stop or reduce the likely trigger, not to layer more active products over irritated skin.
Which ingredients support skin barrier repair?
Ceramides and other skin-similar lipids support the outer layer; humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid improve hydration; and emollients such as squalane smooth roughness. Occlusive ingredients help reduce water loss. A simple, well-tolerated formula is usually more useful than a long ingredient list when the skin is reactive.
How long does a damaged skin barrier take to recover?
Mild irritation may improve within several days after the trigger is removed, while more significant dryness or sensitivity can take a few weeks. The exact time depends on the cause and whether irritation continues. If the skin worsens, repeatedly flares or shows little improvement, seek professional advice.
Should I stop retinol and exfoliating acids while my skin barrier recovers?
If the skin is burning, persistently stinging, peeling or inflamed, pause optional retinol, acids and scrubs. Use a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen until comfort returns. Reintroduce only one active at a time and at a lower frequency. Follow any prescribed treatment according to the prescriber's advice rather than stopping it without guidance.
Is slugging good for a damaged skin barrier?
An occlusive ointment can reduce water loss and help some very dry skin, but “slugging” is not suitable for everyone. Heavy layers may feel uncomfortable on oily or acne-prone skin and can increase irritation if applied over strong active products. Patch test and use a small amount over a simple moisturiser rather than sealing in an irritating routine.
Can barrier-repair skincare treat eczema or rosacea?
No. Gentle barrier-supporting products may improve comfort alongside an appropriate care plan, but they do not diagnose or treat eczema, rosacea, allergy or infection. Use medical treatments as directed and ask a professional before adding strong actives. Persistent rashes, eye symptoms, weeping, crusting or swelling need assessment.
